The Long Winter - Laura Ingalls Wilder, Garth Williams So, I have a lot of problems with the treatment of the Native Americans. And all of the signs foretelling the harsh winter are, in fact, not supported by science. And the casual way everyone breaks the law as far as claiming land would make Ayn Rand mighty proud. Nonetheless, it's a gripping story. Even knowing that they're not going to starve to death, or be lost forever in a white out. As a story of relentless hunger and cold, it's quite good. Do I really believe that everyone was as cheerful and thankful as all that during the worst winter of their lives? Not hardly. But I appreciate their efforts to persevere and not whine. And I appreciate that Pa is practical enough to overcome his scruples about accepting help from his daughter.Good stuff. Have the pancake mix ready.Teacher's copy, read along side Natasha's reading for class.
