This is the first penguin book I've ever read that gave equal weight to the business of scientific inquiry as to penguin facts. And since by now I've acquired most of the facts, this was all new stuff. The author describes trying on the arctic wear at the massive clothing facility for researchers in New Zealand, the long flight to the research base in Antarctica, how the set up their camp, how the set up the penguin colony for research, how penguins react to being tagged. All sorts of stuff I've never thought about.

Fascinating detail and overall impressions: she tells how often they work well "overtime" because the sun's position never changes, and it never feels like the day is over.
