Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe (and Parents Sane) - Gavin de Becker Real risk assessment and real skills for protecting children. I'm not a big fan of self-help in general, and I'm really extremely scornful of the prtect-yourself advice usually given to women, which amounts to: don't go anywhere or do anything and if you get raped it's all your fault. There's no bogus "stranger danger" warnings. Most children who are abducted are taken by a non-custodial parent. Most assaults take place in the home. Scaring kids isn't going to make them safer, but specific advice can help. Like, if you get lost or separated from your parents ask a woman for help (a woman is much more likely to stay with a child until the situation is resolved). de Becker is very big on trusting your gut when it tells you something is wrong.
