Anna cares about nothing so much as film. A rising senior, she's devastated when her father decides to send her off to the School for Americans in Paris. She doesn't know French, she isn't prepared to leave behind her friends or her family, and she doesn't know that Paris is a movie-watchers mecca. The book follows her through nine months of making friends, losing friends, and nine months of romantic upheaval.Much of the charm is that Anna learns as much about friendship as she does about romance. Like the novels of Sarah Dessen, the book focuses on her becoming a more complete person, without losing the strength she already has. Using the boarding school as a microcosm, Perkins manages to fit much of the college experience in without having to stretch the narrative to long. It's charming. I only wish there had been more about Anna's blog reviewing movies.
Update: the Anna ebook will be on sale for $2.99 on Sunday, Jan. 27. If you want a copy, now's the chance.
