The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir

The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir - Thi Bui Twenty-first century Joy Luck Club: there is a lot here about what refugees lose, and never get back. There is the burden on the second generation to do well, and the fear of not doing well enough. And there is the particular sorrow of trying to fill the gaping hole left by a dead child, and the special burden that creates for the children who come after.
I'd like to force everyone who wishes to deny sanctuary to refugees to read this, as many times as necessary for them to understand it. Returning from the Viet Man was was traumatic in itself for many vets. I get that, and I have let that knowledge guide my treatment of vets from all the wars since, regardless of the reasons for war. But I can't begin to understand what it must be like to emigrate into a nation that despises you on principle.
Excellent material well-defined by the art.
