All-American Girl - Meg Cabot My daughter read it, then passed it along to me. It's cute. Light and frothy but with some serious issues considered along the way. Sam Madison sounds like Mia, or Allie, and like Meg herself in her blog. That's not any kind of slight. Cabot does a marvelous job of getting the age/voice combo right, so while the voice is similar, it's also age-appropriate to the character.

the very best thing about the book though, is the art. Whether or not one enjoys drawing, Cabot writes about art in a very sincere and knowing way that applies to any endeavor that sucks a person in. And I just love people talking about their obsessions.
