This was a Christmas present to myself. Many modern writers err by giving their period characters modern ideals. Baratz-Logsted gets it just right by creating a fifteen-year-old girl in the 1800s who doesn't believe in full-on modern feminism, she just wants an education. Her very narrow focus keeps her believable. Although Bet is ernest in her pursuit of knowledge, she's otherwise a fairly light-hearted character. The many references to Shakespeare's heroines-disguised-as-heros make it clear that this is a romantic comedy of the first order. And it's a little thing, but I especially liked that for all her planning, Bet managed to overlook one key issue, and I loved how that was dealt with. Amusing and sweet, the worst thing I can say about this book was that there wasn't more of it. I liked Bet and would have loved to spend more time with her.
